Shot Making - Hilly Lies

There is no doubt that many shots played in golf are from lies that are not flat. The question is, what do we have to do to hit a good shot from an uneven lie? While many players just swing away like it was a regular shot, the best golfers know that you need to adjust to correct for the change in ball flight. The following are some tips we know for uneven lies.

Uphill Lie

The first thing you should do is set your shoulders parallel to the ground so your spine will be perpendicular to the ground. This will help you hit the ball crisply. You will also want to take more club because at address, you will notice that the club face is slightly more lofted. The last thing you should do is to move the ball back in your stance about an inch.

Downhill Lie

The down hill lie is similar but opposite to the uphill lie. Like the uphill shot, you need to set your shoulders parallel to the ground so your spine will be perpendicular to the ground. Again, this will help you hit the ball crisply. You will also have to take less club as the natural slope of the hill will deloft the club face. The last thing you should do is play the ball towards your highest foot.

Sidehill Lie with the ball above your feet

When you hit a shot with the ball above your feet, it will cause the ball to move to the left. There are a few things you must do to counteract that effect. The first is to open up the clubface and the second is to aim to the right of your target. You will also need to choke up on the club to ensure a solid hit.

Sidehill Lie with the ball below your feet

When you hit a shot with the ball below your feet, it will cause the ball to move to the right. There are a few things you must do to counteract that effect. The first is to close down the clubface and the second is to aim to the left of your target. Since the ball is lower than the soles of your feet, you will also need to bend your knees slightly more to ensure a solid hit. The last thing you will need to do is take less club.
