Drills

We have had many questions over the last few weeks about drills to improve a golfer’s swing. While every player has a different swing, there are certain things that any golfer can do to hit better shots. This week, we will start talking about how to break apart the swing and work on the arms. The following are two drills that you can do to separate the arms from the body.

Tee in Grip Drill

This is a great drill to get your wrists and arms working properly in the swing. First, take a tee and stick it in the butt end of the grip. This tee will act as your guide to make sure you are doing the drill correctly. Make a swing and stop at waist height. The tee should be pointing in front of the ball toward the target line. This means you have enough wrist cock. If the tee is pointing at your stomach, this means you will need more wrist cock. By adding this wrist cock to your swing, you will be creating a tremendous amount of power that will help you hit the ball higher and farther.

Scissor Drill

The scissor drill is a wonderful drill to help a golfer feel the proper rotation of the arms. The first thing we need to do is get the proper setup. Our goal should be to set up in a closed stance so we need to start by pulling our right foot back so our toes are on the ground and our heel is in the air. We will also need to close our shoulders and hips down as well. The ball should be in the middle of our stance.
When doing this drill, we should swing the club down our shoulder line. Our chest needs to remain pointed at the ball the whole time during this drill. This will let the arms do the work in the swing. When doing this drill correctly, you will notice the great contact the right to left sidespin that is put on the ball, which will create a draw. The ball will not go as far as your normal shots, but is meant to give you the correct feeling when you swing.

When working on these drills, you need to rotate between the drill and your normal swing. You should have a good transition between the drill you are working on and your normal swing. If you work on these drills twice a week, you will notice an improvement in your golf game.
