Drills - Part II
This week is a continuation from last week. We began discussing how you can improve your scores by breaking up the different parts of the swing. There are a few more drills we can give you to separate your arms from your body so you can play better golf.
Feet Together Drill
This is a great drill to try if you use your body too much when swinging. First, place your feet together while setting up to the ball. You will want to use a tee while attempting this drill. When swinging, you will know if you use your body too much because it will feel very different. You will also notice that you cannot sway too much to either side or else you will lose your balance. This will help you figure out what you need to work on. You may have to swing slower at first to get used to the feeling. The ball won’t travel as far, but the objective should be that the ball goes straight.
Right Hand Only Drill (with 3-Wood outside of the ball)
This is a great drill to keep your shoulders level and your body from dropping or raising during the swing. It will also stop you from turning your shoulders too early in the swing. A 3-wood will be used in the drill, but it will not be the club that you hit. You should use a 7-iron and the ball needs to be teed up. The right hand will be the only hand on the 7-iron while the left hand is holding the grip end of a 3-wood. The shaft of the 3-wood should be vertical while the head rests on the ground. The head of the 3-wood should be resting on the outside of the ball so that the left arm is parallel to the ground. This will allow you to swing your right arm and hit the ball while your right arm follows through under your left arm. This will allow you to feel the proper rotation of the right arm during the swing.
Just like last week’s drills, you should rotate between the drill and your normal swing. You should notice a good transition between the drill you are working on and your normal swing. If you work on these drills twice a week, you will notice an improvement in your golf game.
